A crowd of 150 people gathered at the lobby to support Jawad and Max as they faced their hearings yesterday afternoon. The huge amount of support for Jawad and Max included London Met students and staff, representatives from both unions UNISON and UCU, and a large number of supporters from other union branches and higher education institutions.
A solidarity lobby was held simultaneously outside the building of Birkbeck College in Bloomsbury.
Speakers at the rally included: Eddie Rowley and Catherine Maguire, London Met UNISON Branch Committee; Monica Brady of “Freedom and Justice for Samar and Jawad”, the organisation set up to campaign against Jawad’s miscarriage of Justice; Mark Campbell, Chair of London Met UCU branch; and speakers who brought messages of solidarity from Tower Hamlets, Hackney Trades Council and Lambeth College.
Messages of support were also read out from local MP Jeremy Corbyn, President of UNISON Chris Tansley, and Chair of UNISON Higher Education Service Group Executive, Denise Ward.
The mass lobby was then brought to a close with chants of “Reinstate Max and Jawad!!”
Thank you to all those who attended the lobby and helped to publicise it and build support. The huge turnout sends a strong message to university management that we will not tolerate victimisation and intimidation of trade union members or this attack on the right of staff to democratically elect Jawad as our representative to sit on the Board of Governors. The support at the lobby also highlighted the huge amount of solidarity and goodwill for Max and Jawad as they arrived to face their hearings. Jawad has sent us this message: “Thanks for all your support, trust and confidence and for standing by us at this time of need”
Following their hearings both Max and Jawad still remain suspended, as the university’s “investigation” continues.
Our campaign to have Max and Jawad reinstated therefore continues as vigorously as ever.
